GPS System in Aauto-Rickshaws
CHENNAI- Tenders for the much-awaited project of installing GPS-enabled meters in autorickshaws will be floated after the June 27 R K Nagar byelection.
Elcot (Electronics Corpo ration of Tamil Nadu Ltd) will float the tenders at a budget of `80 crore," added the official. The budget and the new fares were announced in August 2013. "GPS-enabled meters will be first given to autorickshaws registered with three regional transport offices for six months on a pilot basis.Based on the success, it will be extended to all 13 RTOs in the city
It took almost two years for them to commission the project. "To get real-time information from GPS, the meters need to have general packet radio service for Internet connectivity. This requires a SIM card, which comes with a re curring cost of `60 per auto per month. This would cost around `6 crore a year," said an STA official.
This cost would have to be borne by the drivers. "We will collect the fee when they come for fitness certificates every year. This will be made mandatory and drivers will not have a choice," said an STA official. "Not paying the fee would be akin to not using a meter; they will be fined accordingly," he added.
"Global Positioning System in auto-rickshaws was brought in to provide security to commuters. Therefore, all autos need to be on the system," said an STA official.
The budget of `80 crore includes the cost of the meters, setting up of servers, control room, salary for the operator at the control room for three years. There will be two control rooms -one in the police commissioner's office and the other at the transport department office.
